I'd probably lean towards the Remington 870 Express, and skip any pistol grips. I used to have a 870 Wingmaster in 12 and 20 guage, and they were solid shotguns. The Wingmasters were made for hunting, but can easily be set up for defense. I'd shop around and see if you can find an 870 Police. But the Express model will work just fine.

And the Mossberg 590 is a solid gun, too. But I'd upgrade to a 590A1 if possible. They make about a dozen different versions of varying barrel length and magazine capacity. Also, Mossberg sells the 500 model in a field/security combo, meaning you can get one that comes with a "field" barrel for hunting, and a "security" barrel for home defense.

If you're choosing between the Remington and the Mossberg, the biggest difference will be the location of the safety. For the Remmy, its on the trigger guard. And on the Mossy, its up by the thumb, which will make it easier for a lefty to access. If you or your wife/gf are a lefty, I'd go with the Mossy. Otherwise, just go to the store and fondle both of them and see which one you like best.
