We all know that the playoffs are subject to a small sample size issue. However, it's still important to maximize your odds in those situations. Staying out of the WC game helps for two reasons: #1, you likely avoid burning your ace. #2, it's a 55-45 game at best. Moreover, the WC team is at a tremendous disadvantage in the next round with the new rules. It's not insurmountable, but it is measurable.
A worthy playoff team should not play .500 ball over the final four months.
It is inexcusable for a team that was 19 games over two months ago, with the record they had, to not get HFA in the NL playoffs.
