The difference in Elway's case was he had the option to go play baseball. I still think it was a dick move. What was Eli going to do if San Diego wouldn't have traded him to NY? Go work at Starbucks?
Eli's decision was based off of his father's experience of being stuck on bad teams. I think Archie had more to do with it than anyone else.
