The Heart Rate monitor is the bomb. I was a first time parent at age 42, my wife, 35. You read and read and read about everything (which scares you half to death) and SIDS might be the scariest of all.
The heart rate monitor, again, puts you at ease. My wife has always had trouble sleeping, even before babies, anything so having alarm makes a huge difference.
It went off one night and scared the living shit out of me. Fortunately, she just positioned herself too far from the center of the crib and it couldn't detect a heartbeat. It only happened once in three years but I'm glad we have it.
