Wow. Well he had access to high priced lawyers who would have put that girl in her place if she was trying to 'gold dig.' But then his knowledge of what doing that to his child would do long term probably stopped him. I have read no mention of his father just his mother being hard working. Perhaps one of his demons was trying to balance not 'abandoning' his child, even financially, and paying for a woman who wanted out.

If she didn't work and failed college as a new mom that is understandable short term. She might have even been experiencing post partum depression if that baby is only 3 months old. I could not have balanced a new baby, work, the pressures of a traveling partner, and college that young. I don't know many who could.

However, I can understand the frustration he'd feel having seen his mother have to work so hard and succeed in raising him. Maybe while they were 'on' he was happy in his role as provider but when they were 'off' he resented her and saw her as using him.

I think that is quite plausible.
