If you just want to come back to Kansas City and set up shop as a solo practitioner or become a prosecutor somewhere, then Duke would be a vanity choice and UMKC would be just as good (in fact, probably better due to the more practical focus on Missouri law). But if you have aspirations to work at a top tier law firm on Wall Street or in DC or some other major city, it helps a lot (i.e. it's almost essential) to go to a big name law school.
