For me, it seems more realistic. Like a lot of actors probably go through something like this at some point throughout their careers and I think it shows Vince's resolve to restore his credibility.

See, I actually like the aspect. What I don't like is the lack of direction. When he's on top, he's actually DOING things for his career. They wrote his downfall and bottomlessness to be nothing but dead ends with no real direction. Yeah, he's down, but he doesn't seem to be doing much.
Having said that, they kept the character consistent: principled.
