Back when coffee first became popular in Europe. It was hard to source the beans and control quality. So coffee houses roasted dark to get a uniform flavor no matter the source or quality.
Dark roasts are not burnt though. Starbucks tastes burned.

Yep, I always get light roast. Dark roast is for people who don't really understand or like coffee.
