My dad had an opportunity to play in the Cards minor league system in 1950. The same week he was going to sign, he got drafted and was evenutally sent to Korea. He was in the Army 24th Division, trained at Camp Chaffee in Ft. Smith, AR. Came home, got married, got a job. He was a big baseball fan until the A's left KC (he hated Charlie Finley) and then the Chiefs became his favorite sport after that. He followed the Royals but the Chiefs were his passion. Baseball Strike where the WS was cancelled really pissed him off too. He basically quit following baseball after that.
