Though Larry Keating sits on a baseline table at every home game, most KU fans probably don’t know his name — or the vital role he plays for the Jayhawks each year.
Keating is in charge of scheduling, and he knows just how important RPI is when it comes to seeding.
If the Jayhawks — currently No. 2 in the RPI and readying for their regular-season finale against West Virginia at 11 a.m. Saturday — earn a No. 1 seed, it will be just as much a result of calculated planning as it is on-court results.
It all comes down to one mantra Keating has repeated over and over to those who ask him the best way to schedule.
“When you’re playing teams in the leagues below you, you want to play teams that are going to win the most games,” Keating said, “because that’s what helps your RPI.”
