When I was a record buyer, these were a big deal. IIRC, the ones with pictures didn't have the greatest sound though collectability was more the point than actual sound fidelity.
With CDs and now MP3s, it seems like album art is a dying art. Back in the day, music was the number 1 concern but cool album art and liner notes enhanced the buying experience. It was cool to sit on the bed with headphones on while listening to the album the first time and reading through the liner notes and looking at the art. CDs were too small for the same effect and you get nothing when downloading MP3s.
