It's pretty apparent fans on this forum don't view him as the long-term solution. Nothing is apparent about what they think of Smith in regard to long-term other than he's not Manning. They could be having a wait-and-see approach, which is different than viewing him as not the long-term QB. They could extend him in July for all we know.
Not saying he is the long-term solution or arguing against your contention that Flynn could do, just saying that if anything, giving up more than going for Flynn (a guy Dorsey drafted) shows more commitment to Smith and thus the chances of them being open to him as a long-term solution is increased.
