I'll take him at his word about the point, because he himself wrote the introduction to the play and he seemed more concerned with the concept of doubt as a whole than doubt pertaining to any specific point. I think doubt about faith is an element of it, but I just don't think that was the whole point he was making. I think it was more than doubt regarding whether or not the priest was guilty, and I think it can be more significant than that even without doubts regarding faith being the main point.
A lot of life's decisions are filled with doubt, often times you don't know if you made the right choice, and doubt can create strong inner conflict. What's right, what's wrong, can wrong sometimes be justified, etc.
