To varying degrees, educational standards and curriculum are, like politics, "local". Parents should be involved in their child's education --it's one characteristic of a "good school".
Parents willing to ban books is reflection of an authoritarian approach to parenting. Placing a high value on obedience and conformity, holding beliefs that the child should accept without question the rules and standards established by the parents, discouraging independent behavior and restricting a child's autonomy doesn't benefit healthy psychological development, a sense of autonomy or a willingness to stay emotionally attached to the family.
