As with any assistant coach, if he does well, you're going to have to promote him or lose him.
That's the nature of the beast for linebackers coaches, defensive backs coaches, line coaches, etc... If they go out there, do a good job and have a good resume (and by all accounts, Cross fits this description), he's going to want a promotion to a coordinator gig. Otherwise, he'll go to a team that will give him one.
Expecting to hang onto your assistant coaches for more than a few years will have you hiring a bunch of mediocre candidates. The loss of assistants to legitimate coordinator positions or lateral NFL posts actually speaks highly to a programs strength. If you lose Cross in 2 years, it will mean that your program is in better shape than it was for having hired him.
And if he sucks, you guys get to slam the Mizzou guy. Either way, it's a win/win move for the Beakers.
