When I say "lean muscle", I mean that I don't want to bulk up. I'd rather look like a soccer player than a power lifter.
You're wrong about the gaining muscle while losing fat part, though. I have done a lot of both over the past year or so. I've lost more fat than I've gained muscle, but I've gained plenty of muscle.
