You're wrong about the gaining muscle while losing fat part, though. I have done a lot of both over the past year or so. I've lost more fat than I've gained muscle, but I've gained plenty of muscle.

What you mean to say is that you went through periods of fat loss and muscle gains of the last few years... which is perfectly fine.
I was talking about losing fat while building new muscle tissue
at the same time, which is physically impossible unless on drugs. I know it's not as black and white as this, but you cannot build in a deficit, period. Otherwise everyone could be a lean, ripped 220 while eating less than 2K per day.

edit: I'm assuming your not a beginner or severely out of shape. If you are, then yes, you can do both at once.
