I think Frazod's right, I haven't met any 4-year olds that haven't grasped the 'want' vs. 'need' distinction yet.
Once again, I'm forced to ask what my Labrador would do in order to figure out what level Wickedson is communicating at. My Labrador would not run through the shock collar in order to catch a cat. He would, however, run through a the shock collar in order to escape my house were it on fire.
Ergo, my labrador has a better grasp on the want/need dichotomy than Wickedson.
