Plane Crashes Just Short of Runway

The small Cessna crashed into a fenced area at the Murfreesboro Municipal Airport Sunday afternoon and exploded, but the pilot managed to escape the wreckage.

Officials said the Cessna 210 took off from Smyrna just fter 2:30 Sunday afternoon, but the pilot radioed nine minutes later saying he was having problems with the plane's electric trim.

The pilot was cleared to land at the Murfreesboro Municipal Airport, but he came in at a 45-degree angle, causing the plane to skip off the runway before crashing into a fence and bursting into flames.

The pilot, who was the only person onboard the plane, was LifeFlighted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition in the burn unit.

The FAA and the NTSB will be at the crash site Monday to continue their investigation into the crash.

The pilot's name has not been released.
