I could see how they would want to add more hands and eyes to the group. But that dude just shot at them, that should have sealed the deal right there.
Also, even with the dumb decision to bring him back in the heat of battle they're making this more complicated than it needs to be as leaders. Rick and Shane say "we're taking him 16 miles down the road, we'll be more careful this time". How far do you have to be before you can't hear a 45 caliber go off? 1 mile? 2?
Executing him in front of the group for lots of reasons is dumb. Drive 2 miles, off the guy, sip some whiskey for an hour and drive back saying "last we saw him he was holding up in an abandoned ___________".
The girls and Carl don't need to know the nitty gritty.
