Honestly, Matheny should have had kept Martinez up to start this game, even if it was a brief outing. Pitchers who go 120+ probably need 5-6 days of rest. Having a rested Wainwright start the road trip would have been a big bonus. Instead, Matheny is always playing checkers.

Matheny needs to give Wainwright four full passes in the rotation along with this off day. Rest him until next Tuesday. That way he pitches against Cincy and can still catch the last game of the Pitt series the following Sunday.
