Projectors always work best if you have complete light control. If you do have a bit of ambient light in the room, you just need a projector with a higher lumen output (brighter) that can overcome the light in the room. The tradeoff is that the brightness of the projector can wash out a bit of the picture detail. Also, a brighter screen can help if there is light in the room. Screens can go from almost a gray color (for a completely dark room) to a really bright white color for rooms that have some light. My first theater was in an English basement that had some light so I used a brilliant white screen from a company called Carada and it worked really well. The screen was $800 but compared favorably to screens you would buy at B&M stores for over $2,000.
