I hate them. Especially during the summer, as they have built in time buffers that shut my AC down after a certain period of time (it's limited to 20 minutes on, then must stay off for 30 minutes).
The idea of a wired household sounds cool, but not if it includes the power company being able to place buffers on your usage that you can't affect.

Nest Isn't like that.
Not unless you want it to be.
Some Power companies have agreements with Nest but you have to Opt IN to do the buffering like you're talking about.
My power company has no such agreement
