Admittedly, I'm an optimist by nature. And though I read EVERYTHING about the sport (and have done so for a very long time), I don't have the same level of expertise on the nuances of the game as many posters here. It's why I come to CP in the first place -- to learn new things about my favorite football team, the Kansas City Chiefs. And it's the reason I repeatedly come back despite it getting pretty ugly around here at times.
Which is a long way to say that I don't know if FAU will be a superior football player. But everything I've read indicates we took a flier on him because he has some unique abilities to get to the quarterback. But I also read that, while he has the frame for it, he needed to gain twenty pounds over what was, essentially, a redshirt year.
Because the flier was a first round pick, the team now has an EDGE for four more years at a very reasonable price (three if he doesn't warrant picking up the option). The first round pick is gone; it's a sunk cost. What matters going forward is whether FAU is an above-average rotational piece on a deep defensive line. A star, or even Danna-level production, would be a fine thing at the price the team is paying.
Outside of reports on our new draft-pick-to-be WR (second round), there is no player I'm more interested in hearing about at training camp.
For the record, the Chiefs' first round pick this year will be a LT.
