Expensive yes, dangerous if you don't learn how to do it and lift properly. Don't really know what you mean by that last statement.
I only do it twice a week and regular gym the other days. That's the best combination for me and my age. If if would have been around 25 years ago, I would have been really into it. The people that I know, that take it seriously do very well with it. One guy that I know is an big time ex NFL player, he doesn't compete, but loves it and said the same thing about it as I did. He's told me numerous times that he's in the best shape of his life and that's saying a lot!
