I thought one particular line in a quoted article was interesting:

Nearly every school-boy carries a pistol, and the power of these pistols range from the harmless six-bit auction concern to the deadly Colt's six-shooter.

Edit: I thought it was interesting as it shows the societal change away from guns in the everyday. I wasn't noting it as a means of taking the thread political, so please don't interpret my post as an attempt to do that.
