Lost but not forgotten
Charlie Pace may be lost, but devotees of his band DriveShaft can't let go.
"Happy Birthday Charlie, wherever you are," reads one entry on
http://www.driveshaftband.com, a fansite lovingly maintained by Marie Siu and Jilly despite the fact that the drug-addicted bass player has been missing since his plane went down somewhere in the Pacific last September.
Of course, we know where Charlie is. As TV viewers, we see him every week as one of the crash survivors trying to understand the mysteries that make the hit show Lost so, well, mysterious.
But Marie Siu and Jilly, they exist in a different reality. They were born out of the mind of some ABC executive who came up with the brilliant promotional plan to launch a fake fansite for an equally fake band.
The DriveShaft site is a perfect spoof, with clips of the band's biggest (and only) hit "(You All) Everybody," bios of Charlie (a.k.a. Dominic Monaghan) and his mates, and menus that have failed to be updated (under Tour: "Coming Soon").
Plus, there's a guestbook that may or may not include real comments: "So about the TV guide post," says one. "Why did they say that driveSHAFT is fictional??? They are obviously stupid. And who is Duminac Monahan, and why did they say he was Charlie?... I can't believe they said that driveSHAFT isn't real. MY LIFE IS BUILT AROUND THIS BAND, IT BETTER BE PRETTY DAMN REAL. Right. That's all."
