I figure if they're close enough to make a deal at the deadline and acquire some pitching, you target one of the guys you might look at in FA and try to get the deal done.
Yordano Ventura+the package I just mentioned (or maybe throwing in Chris Dwyer in place of Melville) might move the needle for the Cubs on Matt Garza (unlikely, since he's got 1.5 years left).
Showing some signs of aggression and willingness to spend at the deadline would go a long way towards making KC a more attractive FA destination, I'd think.
Dream world: Trade for Garza now, sign a similar pitcher in FA, and be ready to contend next season.
