He's been trying to rid the universe of Daleks since the beginning of time.

But as he still hasn’t had any luck, Doctor Who’s creators have decided it may be time to let a Doctor Her have a crack.

The boss of the BBC series has conceded that it is more and more likely that fans will get to see the first ever Time Lady.

There has already been speculation that a woman could take over when Matt Smith steps down from his role as the 11th Doctor.

However, TV producer Steven Moffat added to this when he asked an audience of viewers how they would feel about a female piloting the Tardis.

At Edinburgh Television Festival, he admitted a woman Doctor would be more acceptable to fans of the show now than in the past.

He said that the more people talked about it, the more chance there was that it would happen.

Doctor Who has been on our screens for almost 50 years, but all 11 incarnations of the Time Lord have been male.

The actors include William Hartnell, Tom Baker and David Tennant. Leading female roles have been restricted to that of the Doctor’s assistant – played currently by Karen Gillan.

Mr Moffat said: ‘Can I just ask, how many people would continue watching quite happily and believe it was the same person if the Doctor turned into a woman?’

While the response was inconclusive, he added: ‘It is a part of Time Lord law that it can happen.

'I put the reference in the episode The Doctor’s Wife to the fact that a Time Lord could potentially turn into a woman.

‘Who knows, the more often it is talked about the more likely it is to happen some day, I suppose.’
Rumours: It has been speculated that this season may be Matt Smith's last as the doctor, but will he be replaced by a woman?

Mr Moffat also predicted that the show, which begins again next month, will go on indefinitely.

He said: ‘I truly believe it could be a show that outlives everybody in this room. It doesn’t just make money now, it could make money for ever.’

It looks as if the Daleks are likely to get scarier too.

Mr Moffat said: ‘Kids are supposedly frightened of Daleks but they take them to bed.

‘Is there a way we can make them scarier, get them back to being more monstery
