There were no real surprises as far as that was concerned but I think the reason I dug the movie was...
Spoiler!
The way Jason was presented and handled.
Now I can dig the old school mongoloid and zombie Jason presentations of the past but I actually really liked how they made him seem more human and actually intelligent.
I loved the traps (tripwires with a signal to his lair...excellent), the floodlights, the bear trap with Amanda hanging in the sleeping bag above the fire, and how they handled him being able to be all over Crystal Lake. In the originals, it was sort of like he just teleported everywhere lol...at least we get somewhat of an explanation for that too.
I also really liked the fact that he ran and quite honestly, didn't mess around. There wasn't too much stalking, he just went in and took care of business when it came to the kills. I loved when he came charging at Richie, axed him in the dome with the machete, and then kicked him off of it and went straight for Whitney.
One thing I wish they would've touched on his how Jason concealed all the missing persons he's killed AND the vehicles, ala Wrong Turn. We kind of saw this when he brought the headless body down into the mineshaft but it would've been cool to have seen it explained better, esp. considering the Sheriff just totally dismissing the fact that Whitney and the other missing people were at Crystal Lake.
