Cassel represents the tragic Pierrot character in the classic commedia del'arte sense. He's a clown, reviled by the world, and what he desires more than anything is shitting on him, so he shits on the world. It's a comedic formula that goes back for centuries in the Western tradition. It's probably why we all take such great pleasure in bitch slapping him.
