Pointers on picking a Mosin? Read a few of the links above and below for more details. They've mostly been 're-arsenaled', so they've been blued and the wood shellacked. The bores will ALL look kind of bad, due to the primers the Russians used - but if the rifling is strong you're good to go. One more interesting tid bit. The shorter Mosins - M38, M44, will serve as a pretty good 'flame thrower' if you shoot ball ammo after dark. It's kind of fun to watch - it also ruins my night vision if I'm the shooter.
If you choose to hunt with a Mosin - I like Mosin ammo from Prvi Partisan (google it) They're from what used to be Yugoslavia, and make decent, cheap ammo. A lot of the surplus stuff is 'hardball' and not a good choice for putting Bambi down cleanly. Try some of the Prvi hunting ammo, priced pretty well and it always goes bang.
