I used to get them real bad but now I have no issues at all. The most important thing I got are the elastic leg/calf supports. Real simple ones (no preformed shape, black, elastic/stretchy) like basketball players sometimes wear on their arms. They are just like $5 at Dicks.

I also invested in some nice shoe inserts. Those are great for entire foot and leg support as well as keeping the shoes in good condition. The leg supports make the most difference for me by themselves with regards to shin splints and the shoe inserts help that much more.
When I get shin splints I ice them as much as I can. At night I put an ace bandage on and then use another ace bandage to hold ice on there. Then I go to bed.

I also have some compression wraps but it is very important to wrap them for
The outside in.

The biggest thing though is to stretch my calves a LOT.
