That isn't remotely true.
Typically for example only blue bloods win championships in either sport. In the last 30 years the only non blue bloods to break through are Georgia Tech, BYU, Miami, and Colorado and they all have a heck of a lot more history than Ist, Miami winning to the point they are a blue blood. Plus other issues that played into their rise to power that should probably disqualify them as an example. It took the greatest coach in the country 14 years to elevate a similar program in Kst to a conference championship but they haven't gotten any closer than Mizzou to a national title in that time. Iowa State is probably never winning a conference title in football and is most definitely never winning a national title and it has everything to do w/ pedigree.
In hoops UCONN is the only I can think of in that span to win a national title their first trip to the final four. Everyone else had already broken through and established themselves as a power. I think Ist has a ff appearance from like 70 yrs or something but for all intent and purpose for this conversation it might as well be 0. I do think it's possible for them to get the right draw and get to a ff (numerous examples of lesser programs getting there in recent yrs) but a national title is highly unlikely. A conference title merely unlikely although possible.
To say the past and pedigree doesn't affect where and how far a program can go flies in the face of 100+ years of evidence to the contrary and is absolutely not true.
