I'm not going to compare this movie to any other superhero movie besides the previous Superman movies. Why? Because it's not TDK, it's not TDKR, it's not the Avengers, it is Man of Steel... and let me tell you this is not anything like any other Superman that you've seen before. It's not like the animated TV show, it's not like the 80's Superman movies, and it sure as hell isn't like Superman Returns.

First and foremost, I can see the complaints.

Starting with the flashbacks, the first thirty minutes after the Krypton opening is very back and forth. You only get a peek of him as a loner before you're wisked off to his childhood to see about ten minutes worth of footage, then you go back, and forth, and back, and forth, it breaks up the pace but it's not something that just ruins the movie and should be considered nothing more than a gripe.

The destruction at the end of the movie... yeah, it's constant and similar. I would've liked to see Zod and Superman just trade heavy hits instead of throwing each other through literally six or seven buildings over and over again. It does get monotonous.

If they were going to have the final battle it should've just happened in the ashes that they started in. With that in mind how in the hell is the Daily Planet standing after all that? In the end when Clark gets his job, how is he standing in the Daily Planet??? Also I would've liked to see Zod target Lois instead of four random civilians. It would've increased their relationship and his sacrifice for her. To kill Zod over letting her die would've been great.

Zod was kind of a weak villain. He was all talk up until the final battle, they should've given some of Faora's lines and actions to Zod to make him more menacing. Diane Lane took a backseat to Kevin Costner, and Jenny was a throw away character. Lois was kinda dumb in the movie, and honestly as a Pulitzer Prize winning author she is allowed in too many military situations.

Let's explore an alien craft with our camera... and take pictures of this robot that's floating towards me. She deserved to die right then and there. Then later she's on the aircraft that is going to open a black hole? Superman would've never allowed that.

When Jonathan Kent dies, if they both knew that Clark could withstand the tornado, then Clark should've told Jonathan to get Diane Lane to safety while HE rescued the dog, then to expect us to believe he would've just accepted a wave off and let him die? Overall this scene was great, because you felt sorry for Clark and he sold that scream very well. Also when Zod goes after Diane Lane and Superman just bull rushes him and pounds him down for threatening her, hilarious.

Overall I'd give it an 8/10. Maybe I'll like it more the second time around, but for right now it was good, but not great.
