Kansas Jayhawks: The Hottest Team In College Football Recruiting?

2 mins ago by Rick Stavig

Charles LeClaire- USA TODAY Sports

The case could easily be made that the hottest team in College Football Recruiting for the month of December is…the Kansas Jayhawks.
Really? Kansas? Yes, really. Kansas.

No, the Jayhawks didn’t experience the kind of success they’d hoped for this past season, going a paltry 1-11 in Charlie Weis‘ first season in Lawrence. But Weis is doing his best to make up for it on the recruiting front.

Kansas now has 23 verbal commits in the 2013 class, 10 of which chose the Jayhawks in December. What’s been the key to his success? The junior college ranks.

Bill Snyder, the coach of the in-state rival Kansas State Wildcats, has long had a history of pilfering the juco ranks for talent. Apparently, after seeing the Wildcats success this year, Weis has taken notice.

Out of the 23 commitments the Jayhawks have, 15 are juco’s.

Of those juco prospects, Marquel Combs and Chris Martin are two of the most sought after prospects in all of recruiting.

Combs, the one-time Ole Miss Rebels commit, has nearly 50 scholarship offers, from schools of varying stature. The 6’3” 305lb defensive tackle blew up this year for Pierce Community College, and picked the Jayhawks earlier this month.

Martin was one of the most highly sought-after high school recruits in the country not too long ago. He was committed to Weis right before he was fired from Notre Dame, then switched to the Cal Golden Bears after he was let go. Before ever suiting up for Cal, he transferred to play for the Florida Gators. Before ever taking the field for the Gators, Martin transferred to Navarre College. Then this past year he switched to play for the City College of San Francisco. Yes, all of that actually happened. And needless to say, the 6’5” 260lb Martin is looking to settle down for the next two years. Kansas could be the perfect escape for the talented defensive end.

Combs, Martin and the rest of the junior college prospects being brought in are going to be asked to produce immediately.

Judging by their record, that should be readily apparent to those prospects. That reason alone should help the Jayhawks continue their recruiting hot streak.
