I still think it's a solid QB class, it's just that Geno Smith is that good. He's special and it's to the point where I and most others around here want someone special. The "risk" (as Pioli puts it) isn't great enough to give up the required draft picks to acquire a guy like Smith. The only risk is not making a move to get a player/quarterback of this caliber, especially when there is a lot of young talent on this team at a number of positions.

Would we be satisfied with a Barkley, Wilson, et al? Probably, but we are sick and tired of settling. Go up and get this guy - he's the real deal. Smith is one of those prodigy level, special players and, goddammit, we haven't had that guy ever in the draft and really only tried to draft that guy once in Blackledge. Right now, Smith's potential looks to be Aaron Rogers+ and he's got some better skills than Rogers did at the same stage. (Pocket presence, ball placement, timing)

However, the problem is, it's starting to turn into a Luck type of deal with Smith in that the team who is drafting first overall probably won't give up the pick no matter how many enticing trade offers they receive.

The only hope (and sure thing) at this point is that the Chiefs basically tank out the season and finish with the worst record in football. #1 overall pick, and a near guarantee that Pioli and his cronies are kicked to the curb. Either that or you hope that there are teams who simply need a defensive guy worse. But a team like the Saints would draft him and put him behind Brees (a la Green Bay when they picked Aaron Rogers).

Dan Snyder is crazy enough to give up a metric shit ton of picks to move up for a QBOTF. I'm not sure that many other guys, especially a new GM, would be willing to jeopardize his career on such a move. As it stands with the fans, not making the move for Smith would be the single biggest jeopardy that a GM would face here in Kansas City.
