Don't get him/her started on Pheasanst until he is at least 3-4 years old. Work the Quail hard. THe Cocks run too much and will drive a young dog crazy. I had a neighbor that had a black lab he would just lock up, not really like a Pointer, but would jsut stand real still and look at the area where the bird was. At least you won't have to force break him to retrieve. I was a huge bird hunter 5-6 years ago, and was raised with them. My kids hit the sports and now I get to play golf every other weekend. I still miss it, its just here in South Mo there are not many Quail and I get tired of driving 2-3 hours north for birds. Good Luck
