The point is that KU, along with many other college (and even pro) teams play down to their competition, and sometimes it takes a loss to refocus the team. So, considering focus is something you can lose, regain, lose, etc; a loss against a ranked team in November is irrelevant to a discussion about playing down to conference teams in January.
We have the same discussion here every single year after a loss or when they play like crap for a few games... they're due for a loss, get a loss out of their system before the tourney, they need a loss in order to refocus.
And there's probably a little truth to it... they know they don't have to play at 100% all the time to beat some of these teams, so even though I don't think teams necessarily
need to lose, it can certainly get their butts in gear.
