There are several bowls that shouldn't exist. This is one of them. The problem w/ it is for fans bowls are destination trips. Put us in the Music City or Liberty Bowl and we'll likely send more fans bc the locales are better although the bowls aren't any more prestigious.
To two of your points which I agree w/ and are married - too many bowls results in teams that have had underwhelming seasons which are not viewed as successes by their fan bases are still rewarded w/ bowl trips. Way too many.
I by no means think MU travels really great like a Wisconsin bc we don't but here are a couple considerations: that was our 3rd trip to the Indy since 2003, so not only an undesirable location but also our 3rd trip in recent memory. We were lucky to get that bowl w/ the sec's help after the big 12 filled all their slots and jumped us for obvious reasons. So some fans were probably down about it. And the weather was terrible. To the last point that would only affect locals coming out (walk up). I don't think MU fans should be given a free pass but if you compare w/ other Indy Bowls it's not out of the norm bc it's a crap bowl in a crap town.
Also NC didn't just fire their coach for not winning enough, they were mired in an NCAA investigation and Davis' program was viewed as out of control.
