A) My good ol' 2000 Explorer is a great vehicle for light off-road duty. It's been through farm work and absolutely brutal snow/ice conditions and it's still humming right along. They're great vehicles.
B) It's pretty easy to say 'just throw it in neutral' but even for someone that knows how easily that's done, they also know that they're about to blow their car all to hell. Most people will exhaust all other options prior to doing so and in their attempts to do that, they may run out of time. Also, panic and adrenaline do strange things to people. I'd probably lighten up a bit.
