Gays have been persecuted throughout history because of the way they were born. Gays have been brutally murdered by people just for being gay.
So, when you have an openly gay NFL player, it is a huge thing. The NFL is beyond huge in America. Michael Sam isn't exactly Jackie Robinson, but him entering the NFL as an openly gay individual is huge for the homosexual community and for the sport itself.
This isn't the 1940s. In a modern society, people accept what science has proven.
