Professionals (like myself) do not consider suicides to be selfish acts. And what part of saying "I will preserve my brain," is a sign of good judgment in your opinion? I would suggest it just further shows how backwards and flooded his thinking had become.
Suicide attempts are the result of months and more often years of complex mental torment that becomes unbearable. And the makeup of the brain plays a huge role in it. See this post
