Best of Vegas Elite 11

LAS VEGAS- The final Elite 11 Regional tryout is in the books, so now it’s time for the coaching staff to decide which players will ultimately participate in the finals in Redondo Beach, Calif. in July.

Here’s a look at our top prospects from Saturday’s event, which was held on the campus of UNLV.

1-Christian Hackenberg, Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy

The 6-foot-4, 210-pound Penn State commit was everything that we thought he would be in this setting and then some. His size impressed right off the bat as well as his arm strength and quick release. We’ve always like the fact, too, that Hackenberg, though one of the best quarterback prospects in the country, still can develop and get even better (the coaching staff was working with him on balance in his throwing stance). Following the event, he was invited to “The Opening.” Expect him to rise in the next round of 247Sports rankings updates for 2013.

2- Troy Williams, Harbor City (Calif.) Narbonne

Williams always impresses in this setting and Saturday was no different. He has a quick release, good arm strength and is for the most part accurate. He’s shown up at events such as this one and 7-on-7s and more than held his own over the years and Saturday was no exception. Currently committed to Washington, he was excited about the news Saturday that four-star receiver Darrell Daniels pulled the trigger on a commitment to the Huskies while in Seattle. “He told me he was going up there and he could commit,” Williams said. “We want to try to have the most talented team in the Pac-12, so getting players like (Daniels) to commit is very big.”

3-Davis Webb, Prosper (Texas)

The 6-foot-4 Webb is committed to Texas Tech and it’s clear when you watch him sling it that he’s a good fit in that style of offense (sling it around the yard) because of his live arm and quick release. Particularly on slant patterns, Webb was especially effective. He has a bright future in Lubbock if he continues to develop.

4- Shane Cockerille, Baltimore (Md.) Gillman

Alabama commit Parker McLeod did not have his best day in terms of overall accuracy, but his quick release and arm strength were evident.

Cockerille has impressed in this setting on multiple occasions this spring and Saturday was no different. The lefty has excellent size, a big arm and above average footwork. The Maryland commit was happy that the Terps recently picked up commitments from two of the top D.C.-area prospects in this class- four-star offensive tackle Derwin Gray and linebacker Yannick Ngakoue. “I sort of wanted to get things started being the quarterback and one of the first to jump in and all,” Cockerille said. “It’s very nice to get those guys on board as part of this class.”

5- Brandon Dawkins, Westlake Village (Calif.) Oaks Christian (2014)

Dawkins does not look pretty throwing the ball in terms of throwing motion, but the ball comes out of his hands exceptionally well, he can throw an accurate deep ball with excellent velocity and he’s accurate for the most part- so throwing motion aside, the 2014 four-star has the makings of a big-time player. Notre Dame has already offered Dawkins, who threw for more than 3,000 yards and was the sophomore Player of the Year in California last season.

6- Zack Greenlee, Stockton (Calif.) Lincoln

Greenlee showed a live arm, quick release and excellent footwork during the drills Saturday morning. He’s accurate, has excellent velocity on his passes and was generally impressive in all phases, which is a big reason why he won MVP and was invited to the finals. BYU, Fresno State, Oregon State and Washington State are among the schools that are showing interest, but he still is waiting on his first offer.

7- Parker McLeod, Marietta (Ga.) Walton

Arm strength and a quick release stand out about McLeod when you watch him throw. Today, he was not as accurate as he was at Alabama’s prospect camp when he earned an offer and subsequently committed, but he still was generally accurate. On film, he shows a headiness and comfort level with the game that combined with his ability to get the ball out quickly, gives him the upside to compete at a BCS conference program.

8- Danny Etling, Terre Haute (Ind.) South Vigo

Purdue is getting a good quarterback prospect in Etling, who has a nice arm and excellent size. During the early portion of the camp in individual drills, he displayed good footwork and made some good passes rolling out. Etling currently is the nation’s No. 43 pro-style quarterback prospect according to 247Sports and could rise a bit in those rankings in the near future.

9- Brandon Cox, Pasadena (Calif.)

This setting isn’t where Cox, who is considered both a quarterback prospect and a versatile athlete prospect that could play a number of different positions in high school, necessarily can show you what he is all about. With that, we were impressed with the zip he put on his passes, his general footwork and the competitiveness with which he approached the drills. Arizona, Iowa State and New Mexico State currently are his three scholarship offers.

10- Trent Hosick, Kansas City (Mo.) Staley

Hosick is another prospect who you have to really judge in pads, live to get a true picture of what he can do with both his arm and his feet. Regardless, he threw the ball around well Saturday morning and we believe the Missouri commit is an excellent fit for what the Tigers like to do on offense.
