I don't think it is out of bounds. The MC is responsible for alot of damage from their business, and from the get go this show has been about Jax's uneasiness with the gun trade. He seems to have gotten less uneasy as he was forced to stay in business, but Sutter is trying to put a line down that no one can continue to accept. It would be silly to go back to yet another ATF of IRA storyline to destroy or salvage the club (however he chooses to end it) without this kind of story.

He was clearly juxtaposing victim and criminal with the scene transitions from the kid's face to Jax's. Jax has repeatedly excused his decisions, including the one giving those same guns to Nero's guys, by telling himself it was just one deal done for the greater peace, and now he is going to have to become a real bad guy, worse than Clay perhaps, to keep the business going after this.

They even used the porn side business int his episode to illustrate that these guys still consider themselves not so bad, or the lesser of evils, but can they look past this knowledge? I think it sets up a pretty good wrap up to the show and two seasons to do it.
