ST. LOUIS • Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina, an MVP-caliber engine behind the team's strong first half, left the ballpark late in Saturday's game to have his right knee examined by team doctors.
Molina was having a scan taken of the joint in order to determine the cause and severity of soreness that started late Friday.
Manager Mike Matheny called it an "irritation."
Matheny said he did not start Matheny and that the catcher was not available during the game
because of the discomfort that began during Friday's game. Adam Wainwright said he spoke to Molina and that the catcher was confident with some days of rest he would be alright to play. Wainwright cautioned that he had not heard the results of the test, only talked to Molina.
"We just want to rule things out and get a good look at it," Matheny said.
The right knee is the same knee that Molina had surgically repaired in 2007. An MRI would be needed to determine if there are floating bodies within the knee or another reason for the irritation or inflammation.
Matheny expressed concern about the catcher's condition.
The expectation is that Molina will receive several days off to rest the ailing knee.
