I heard that violence has recently re-escalated after being down considerably since a few months after the surge went into effect. The depressing thing in what I read is taht the leaders of the various sects, in a meeting with a senior (local) US commander, essentially said that they didn't think the peace would hold once the US left.

The US commander was very surprised. It was fairly depressing. The gist of it was that the US military has brought stability and (relative) peace, but that the underlying problems aren't being resolved.

It's what I've been worried about since the beginning. The citizens of Iraq have deep cultural and religious differences that BushCo seems to ahve been completely ignorant about. It's not a natural geo-political entity, and has only been held together over the 90 or so years of its existence by forceful leadership.
