No. 1, no. 2, and no. 3 are not positions. X, Y, and Z are positions. Split end, flanker, and slot.
He was not a 'number two' WR. He played Split end in 3 WR formations and Boldin usually moved over into the slot.
If you're going to grade guys as 1, 2, and 3, then do so by playing time. In that regard he would have been a #3 WR. There are already multiple ways to reference the specific WR position they're playing and none of them are numbers.
After boldin left he was a decent 2nd option and incredibly good 3rd option. I like Breaston. It's not worth thinking about why he wasn't playing, because there is no sane reason.
