Ok Guru..here's how it works on Halo 3.
Go into matchmaking from the main menu. When you're in the Lobby, and the button says join, tap A and it will say NOT SIGNED IN and will ask you if you want to launch the XBox Guide to sign in a gamer profile, select yes and scroll to the very bottom where it says Guest - XBox Live.
Then it will sign you in on the first controller as Guru, and on the second controller as Guru(1). Most every shooter, sans COD4 has a guest sign-in option and on Halo 3 you can have like 3 guests for your one Gold Membership.
