You are also moving the goalposts here. He's not a franchise QB, and no one is claiming he is. Franchise QBs carry MUCH more value than 1 definite 2nd round pick and another potential one in the following draft.

Would I have traded for Alex Smith? No. But people I wanted here leading this team think enough of him that they can win with him. Am I going to stomp my feet and pout constantly before I even watch him play in a game? No, I won't do that either.

They could have cut Alex after any year. It was not a 3-year commitment. Matt Flynn started 2 games and got a better contract from Seattle than Alex got from SF.
Alex was always a placeholder for Kaepernick. Always.
